About the Project
The Octant Douro House Collection is one of the most technically and aesthetically demanding hotel construction projects undertaken by Huître. The project resulted in 20 private retreats with a minimalist design – 16 one-bedroom units and 4 two-bedroom units – situated on the Douro hillside and designed to blend into the landscape. The interiors stand out for their meticulous use of fine Portuguese materials: local schist, wood, steel and handcrafted tiles, in a design language where natural light and organic textures define the character of each space. With panoramic balconies and private gardens, each house offers a unique experience overlooking the river.
Key Challenges
Building 20 homes on a schist hillside over two years required specific engineering solutions for each unit – the uneven topography of the Douro does not allow for a repetitive approach. The construction of seven private plunge pools with individual climate control, harmonising the design lines with the schist terrain, was the greatest technical challenge. The site logistics on a hillside with no easy access, involving large-scale premium materials, required transport and crane planning throughout the entire project.
